Match Report

Northampton Casuals
Today we
entertained Northampton Casuals in the first match of the season. We have a
great relationship with the Casuals and always look forward to playing against
them every year.
The
Raiders took on the Casual “A” team and from the outset a fast pace was set with
both teams looking to play rugby. The Casuals team were strong and powerful in
the breakdown area and gained the upper hand. Daventry counter attacked well and
moved the ball wide at every opportunity to the speedsters Sam and Angus. This
resulted in the try of the match when the forwards of Sam, Thomas and Joe
produced quick ruck ball that was moved through 5 pairs of hands before Angus
raced into the corner with a flying “Ben Cohen” dive. Hooker Sam C threw the
ball in with great precision enabling a good supply of ball for the backs.
The
Gladiators then took on Casuals “B” team. Daventry welcomed several new players
to the club today, and they were straight into action. The team started
nervously at first against the bigger Casuals players. As the game progressed
the Daventry players started to grow in confidence and the tackles were being
made with real commitment. This unsettled the Casuals team and Daventry started
to take the game to them. Elliott led the charge with impressive strong running
setting up quality ruck ball for the backs. Alex playing at scrum half moved the
ball well to the inexperienced back line. They surprised all by moving the ball
to the wings providing Bradley with opportunities to race down the wing causing
Casuals defensive problems. Kibb in his first game made some excellent tackles.
Both
teams enjoyed the games and we decided to play a third match.
Daventry
used the game to mix and match the Raiders and Gladiators to see combinations of
players in action. This game was the pick of the three as the players keep their
discipline and shape and attacked the wide areas. The Daventry forwards of Kibb,
Sam and Elliott got the better of the Casuals and the supply of ball increased.
William moved the ball immediately to release the back line early creating
scoring opportunities. This match resulted in both wingers Bradley and Sam C
scoring excellent tries in the corners.
A very
enjoyable day was had by all the players, and this came through the excellent
educational style of refereeing of Daventry’s Johnny Smith.
Today’s
Raiders player of the day was Sam C for his improvement in throwing in and
strong running. The Gladiators player of the day was Kibb for his exhibition of
tackling. Elliott caught the eye today for his strong running and rucking, this
is down to Elliott being a regular trainer on Friday and Sunday and working hard
and listening to his coaches.
Well done
to all players a good first match.
