Under 10's Match Report v’s Banbury & Towcester

This week we all travelled to Banbury to play in a triangular with Towcester. The players were keen to play as we had been without a game for 4 weeks.

The Raiders were drawn against Tows “B” team in the first game.

Daventry started the match a set up a quick ruck, moved the ball right and created quick rucked ball. William moved the ball quickly out wide where Angus raced up the wing before being held. A ruck was formed and quickly won the players moving the ball wide for Rhys to score in the corner. Phew! One score up and Towcester had not touched the ball yet.

The Daventry players continued in the style of play and opened up a 15-0 half time lead with tries through Angus and a second for Rhys.

Daventry built on the first half performance with strong tackling from Kibb and Joe. The back line managed by flyhalf Dawson continued to move the ball wide. Dawson going over from a penalty in the corner. The forwards now rampant in the loose sealed a comprehensive victory with a superb try by Thomas.Sam C made his debut at centre and showed the large crowd his speed of hand and positional awareness. Daventry won 25 – 0.

This was the performance of the season and the drills and exercises in training paid off today.

The gladiators then took to the field drawn against Tows “A”. This was a fast paced game with Tows opening up the scoring immediately catching Daventry napping. Daventry re-grouped and started to play as a team. Several players were making their debut starts today Robert, Jordan, Richard, and Sam C and Robert Y returning to the team. Daventry moved the ball at every opportunity and tried to work the wide channels, turnover ball allowed Tows two more scores before half time.

The second half was a better display from Daventry with Jordan showing well at the breakdown. A solid return from Robert Y in the forwards will see Robert challenging for a place in the Raiders. Tows eventuall ran out winners 35 – 0.

The third match saw the Raiders team drawn against Banbury, last season Daventry lost 25-0 to Banbury. The raiders continued with the wide quick game plan against a strong Banbury side. This was a magnificent game to watch as two good teams battled for dominance. Banbury slipped a tackle and scored the first try. Daventry continuing to ruck the ball well and moved the ball quickly wide managed to secure a penalty 5 metres out. From the tap Dawson stepped inside and levelled the scores at half time.

The second half Daventry were magnificent in defence and unlucky in attack. The game ended in a 5-5 draw and was a fair result between to evenly matched teams.

Today the coaches award went to Dawson for a fine try saving tackle in the Banbury game when he knocked the ball out of the players hand preventing a certain try. Well done Dawson.

The player of the day award went to scrum half William. William followed the game plan exactly and moved the ball with speed from set piece and breakdowns to give the backs opportunities to attack. Well done William.
