Match Report
v’s
Harbury
The team travelled to Harbury
today looking to build on recent performances and progress their style of play.
The weather was driving rain and the wind chill made for a freezing day.
The Raiders took on a strong
well drilled Harbury team from the start. Harbury opened the scoring only for
Daventry to respond immediately 5 – 5 after three minutes played. Rhys finishing
off some quick well worked ball. This promised to be an exciting game. Daventry
then sat back and allowed Harbury to run at them and gain in confidence. The
Raiders then went to sleep or were so cold they could not think and allowed
Harbury to score at will. Our usual powerful scrum was disrupted by Harbury who
drove us off the ball continually.T he final score was 35 – 5. Players who
caught the eye were Rhys for his agression at the break down, Elliott for some
fine scrummaging and support work.
The players retired to the
changing rooms to get warm and regroup. The Gladiators then took to the field.
Several new players Zeb, Robert R took to the field and the game changed. The
scrum of Robert, Sam and Elliott was improved and Daventry started to win some
ball and the backs moved it with fast hands to the wings. Our rucking game
started to work and momentum swung towards Daventry. Several players were so
cold they had to leave the field of play. Angus and Sam C retired to the warm
and Daventry played with 8 men. This seemed to lift the players and suddenly we
were playing with greater conviction and only tailing 10 – 5. The scrum of
Thomas, Robert R and Elliott became dominant and drove Harbury back time and
time again. From one such scrum William darted over to level the score. From the
restart Daventry secured turnover ball and William ran 30 meters down the
touchline to score in the corner, 10 -15. Once again from the restart Daventry
secured quick turnover ball Rhys danced his way through the middle of the field.
Daventry then set up a fantastic driving maul and Rhys was driven over the line
for a great team try, 10 – 20.
This was a great performance
with only 8 players on the field and showed the spirit in the squad. Players of
note today we Robert R a strong performance in the scrum, Elliott for his scrum
and support play.
Today’s coaches award went to
Rhys for his aggression and excellent behaviour, well done Rhys.
The player of the day was
awarded to Elliott for his performances in both matches. This has been coming
for a couple of weeks as Elliott trains hard and listens to the coaches. His
play on the field was matched by his fantastic attitude and behaviour off the
field. Well done Elliott.
