 Under 10’s V’s Earlsdon

We travelled to Coventry today to play Earlsdon.

The squad was reduced this week due to half term holidays and some players opting to take a spring skiing break and recharge their batteries.

With eleven players they all received maximum game time this week.

In the opening match Daventry played with structure and control in the set piece, providing our backs lots of clean fast ball. Daventry moved the ball wide at every opportunity and the handling was excellent. In the opening foray’s Thomas was rampant in his driving play supported by hooker Elliott and Robert. This robust unit of forwards controlled the game for long periods driving Earlsdon back again and again. Earlsdon had a lineout 5m out from the Daventry line, Thomas stole the ball and trundled, 15m before being forced into touch. Another Earlsdon lineout and again Thomas stole and broke 40m before going in touch 3m from their line. This was a magnificent display  from Thomas before he had to leave the field with a bump on his face, being replaced by Joe and Seb on the wing.

The second half Robert took over the forward charge and led the way with strong tackling. The changed back line ran and tackled well. Sam S on the wing made some thunderous tackles guarding the wide spaces with maturity and control. Daventry had gone behind and the clock was ticking down when quick line out ball moved wide allowed Dawson to dive in the corner to equal the score.

A great performance from the team and a great match to watch for the travelling fans.

The second match saw changes and Jordan and Seb made starts on the wings. This match became a real battle with both sides hitting hard and fast. The tempo of the game was raised and a great duel unfolded between the two teams. Daventry got caught watching the game and allowed Earlsdon an opening unopposed try.

Robert with great courage and belief took the game to them from the restart and drove into the heart of Earlsdon finally being brought down 3m short before the poacher Dawson dived over the line.

This set the pattern of the game with both teams fiercely competing for the ball at every opportunity. William had the drop of their scrum half and secured some great turnover ball for the backs to attack with. Seb put in his finest performance today making some outstanding tackles, Sam S was again magnificent in defence. Elliott playing at hooker today in the absence of Sam C looked sharp and threw in with great accuracy.

In the second half Daventry battled hard and competed for every inch on the field.

The game ended in a 10 – 10 draw.

Today was a gritty robust performance and the players advanced to the next level today and showed great character and team spirit.

Every player deserved an award today for great performances. Today’s coaches award went to Seb who showed us how to tackle and had an awareness we have not seen before, must be the training on Friday nights. Congratulations.

The player of the day went to Robert, Robert was focused and mobile today covering the field well and driving and tackling. It was his restart running that caught the eye and won him the deserved award. Congratulations Robert.

Other players deserving a mention are Angus who played at centre today, Sam S, Thomas for his aggression, William for his technical game, Elliott who performed well at stand in hooker, Kibb who played at centre for the first time.

Next week we are in the MOBBs tournament.
